Overview

The Ph.D. program in Biotechnology provides advanced, up-to-date multidisciplinary training in biotechnology, integrating knowledge from various areas of the biological sciences, technology transfer, biobusiness, and scientific communication while fostering scientific research and technological innovation in these fields. In this way, the program helps train researchers with the skills needed to address current and future challenges in the biotechnology sector, thereby contributing to society and the country’s sustainable development.

General Objective

The general objective of the Ph.D. program in Biotechnology is to provide excellent, multidisciplinary doctoral education that equips graduates to address biotechnology challenges and propose solutions using advanced knowledge and skills in the life sciences and in the development of bio-based technologies. This education is grounded in systematic, independent, and original research and in the communication of findings, particularly in the research lines of Biomedical and Animal Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, and/or Plant Biotechnology, while integrating knowledge of intellectual property and patenting, bioethics, and biobusiness.

Specific Objectives

The specific objectives of the program are:

  1. Provide learning opportunities through which students acquire advanced knowledge in the life sciences, particularly in the research lines of Biomedical and Animal Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, and/or Plant Biotechnology, as well as in intellectual property and patenting, bioethics, and biobusiness.
  2. Provide multidisciplinary training that enables students to address biotechnology challenges through scientific research and the development of bio-based technologies.
  3. Promote the production of cutting-edge knowledge and its dissemination through scientific articles or patent applications, in accordance with bioethical guidelines.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of the Ph.D. program in Biotechnology at Universidad Andrés Bello possess advanced knowledge and skills in the life sciences and in the development of bio-based technologies. These competencies enable them to identify and address biotechnology challenges and propose innovative solutions from a multidisciplinary perspective, responsibly and in accordance with bioethical principles.

Graduates possess critical analysis and scientific reasoning skills that enable them to conduct independent and original research, particularly in the research lines of Biomedical and Animal Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, and/or Plant Biotechnology. They also possess knowledge of intellectual property and biobusiness and can communicate their research findings in writing and orally.

Upon completing the program, graduates are able to:

  • Conduct independent and original research from a multidisciplinary perspective by formulating research questions and developing methodological strategies to propose innovative solutions to complex biotechnology problems through bio-based technologies, while observing bioethical standards.
  • Generate new knowledge by designing and conducting research projects in one or more of the following research lines: Biomedical and Animal Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, and/or Plant Biotechnology, while considering intellectual property and biobusiness.
  • Communicate research findings in writing and orally, in accordance with standards recognized in the discipline or field of study.

Program Research Areas

A multidisciplinary area of study focused on advanced fundamental and applied research on the physiology, cell biology, and molecular biology underlying human and animal diseases, as well as research aimed at increasing the productivity and health of commercially important animal species. This knowledge is used to develop bio-based technologies that primarily address health-related challenges. This research involves developing products or methods based on knowledge of human or animal biology, including innovative treatments for different diseases, new diagnostic systems, and improvements to procedures and production processes.

A multidisciplinary area of study focused on advanced fundamental and applied research on the physiology, metabolism, genetics, and omics of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, to develop bio-based technologies that primarily address health, agricultural, industrial, or environmental challenges. This research involves developing products or methods based on microorganisms by optimizing procedures and production processes and/or through genetic manipulation.

A multidisciplinary area of study focused on advanced fundamental and applied research on the physiology, metabolism, genetics, and omics of plants or algae to develop bio-based technologies that primarily address agricultural, environmental, or marine challenges. This research involves developing products or methods based on plants or algae by optimizing procedures and production processes and/or through genetic improvement.

Biomedical and Animal Biotechnology

A multidisciplinary area of study focused on advanced fundamental and applied research on the physiology, cell biology, and molecular biology underlying human and animal diseases, as well as research aimed at increasing the productivity and health of commercially important animal species. This knowledge is used to develop bio-based technologies that primarily address health-related challenges. Microbial Biotechnology

Applicants to the Ph.D. program in Biotechnology must hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biochemistry, biotechnology, biology, or a related field.

  • Letter of Intent describing your interests and the reasons why you wish to apply to this program at Universidad Andrés Bello.

* If you hold a degree from a foreign institution, it must be equivalent to one of the degrees specified in the Program Approval Decree. If selected, applicants must submit all documentation required by the University to the Ph.D. Program Office in order to complete the enrollment process.
